About Us
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As we wind down our gardening duties outdoors, we will begin to ‘gear up’ for our club activities. I look forward to the familiar things like learning from our programs, the interaction of the membership, and to the hard work of the chairpersons and their committees. I also look forward to the unfamiliar or unknown. Perhaps we’ll find a new way to fund raise. Maybe I’ll discover a new plant I must have in my garden. It might be a tasty new recipe to try, or unearthing a latent creativity I never dreamt I possessed.
An ever changing Board has to adhere to certain common goals. The Board has to direct our club in a positive direction toward promoting gardening in the community, educating its membership on good and responsible gardening techniques, and nurturing nature in general. As we go about our civic activities, including but not limited to community gardening, mini-grants for local schools, holiday wreaths for the senior centers and train depot, donations to the local “Open Arms Mission”, Arbor Day contributions, we must remember the positive impact we have on our village. Susan Cooney, the new GCI president, encourages all Illinois Garden Club members to "Ensure Nature; Educate, Advocate". I encourage everyone to join in the fun and hard work that makes the Antioch Garden Club the best.

THE GARDEN DIRT
Published monthly, our newsletter is an important Club communication including a monthly calendar of events, reminders, minutes of each meeting, garden checklists, book reviews, District IX events, and reflections, My Garden Gate, by editor, Meredith Schnelle.
Educational Mini Grants
The Antioch Garden Club provides funds for teachers with exciting ideas and projects in the areas of sound horticultural practices, civic beautification, protection of our environment and the conservation of natural resources. The teachers can use the funds to purchase supplies or other needs that would enhance student learning.
Community Christmas Cheer
The Antioch Garden Club creates wreaths and other holiday decorations for the Senior Center, four Senior Housing units, the Depot, the Historical Society’s Meeting House and Museum.
The Horticulture Committee promotes civic and environmental responsibility as it continues to direct the care of four Village gardens created and cared for by members of the Antioch Garden Club:
Mini-Park/Walkway Garden
This white and blue dominated garden on Main St. in Antioch represents a cool color scheme. It is an evolving garden, being reimagined regularly. The gingko tree was planted in memory of Nels Rasmussen, an avid gardener.
Berm Garden
This berm, at the corner of Main & Orchard St. in Antioch, was the first undertaking of the Antioch Garden Club. It consists mainly of perennial plants.
Seven Son Flower Tree Garden
The Seven Son Flower Tree is a newcomer to America, having been brought here from China in 1980. Its’ fragrant creamy blossoms attract butterflies in September. This tree, on Orchard St. has an interesting bark and offers beauty in all seasons.
School House Garden at Lakes Region Historical Society
These gardens, at the corner of Main & Depot St., provide a magnificent backdrop to the Historical Society’s old school house.
