March Garden Club Program

March. 12th, 2022 Antioch Senior Center

The program for the March 2022 was All About the Seeds, organized and presented by our program committee members Marianne P. and Jane B. A nice display of seed-starting materials, tools, and DIY information were presented, along with many flower and vegetable seeds for exchanging.  Most of the seeds were brought in by members from their own gardens, also some from supporting vendors. Everyone attending the meeting was happy to bring a collection of seeds home. Seeds exchanges can really promote biodiversity in our gardens and offer an opportunity to try something new! Spring is in the air. Let's get ready to have our seeds started!

    April Garden Club Program

April 9, 2022 Antioch Senior Center

With the club's annual perennial plant sale coming up May 14, we enjoyed viewing club member Cindy Cartner's video presentation, "Transplanting 101," which is on YouTube. We listened to her tips afterwards for giving the perennials we divide and share a good start to ensure they will do well in buyers' gardens this spring. Then member Jane Buck, master gardener, drew on her years of experience serving on several invasive plant committees in different states to educate the club about the invasive plants found in Illinois. She explained what they are, how to identify them, where to find them, and why we should care. Many people unintentionally share invasive plants and shrubs, and some people and businesses even sell them. It was illuminating to discover what the most common ones are in our area and how to do our part to stop their spread. Invasive plants that were in many cases introduced over the years for what people thought were good reasons, now crowd out native plants and disrupt the ecosystem in the state. We again shared seeds with one another, and welcomed new members and guests. Next month's meeting will be our annual plant sale! See you there!

    Invasive Plants of Illinois

This program will be presented by our fellow AGC member Jane Buck, a master gardener and flower show judge. She will do a presentation of invasive plants of Illinois with a colorful PowerPoint.

    Dividing Perennials

Our fellow AGC member Cindy Cartner will give a presentation on dividing perennials. She is going to discuss the do’s and don’ts of dividing our prized plants, mean-while showing her video “Transplanting 101”.

Add a Little Prairie to Your Garden

We had a wonderful presentation this month from Cindy Crosby. Illinois prairies are a rare and spectacular landscape. Cindy's presentation showed us how to create a native garden that is aesthetically pleasing and will bring rare and beautiful butterflies and bees to our home gardens!  The presentation was well received by our members and guests.

After the presentation we inducted our newest member Laura S. and enjoyed refreshments provided by our monthly hospitality members.

Cindy Crosby is an author/contributor to more than 30 books and blogs each week at Tuesdays in the Tallgrass. Holiday Succulent Make & Take

Our friends from Floral Acres provided us with another fun holiday make & take.  This year we created Christmas succulent arrangements. We also learned about how to care for these plants which have become so popular in the last couple years. Our talented club members made some really beautiful arrangements!

After our activity, we had refreshments provided by the hospitality team. During the business portion of the meeting, we inducted two new members. Welcome Nancy and Sharon!

Our club is currently on winter break. Our next meeting will be held at the Antioch Village Center on May 11, 2023.
